The risk of developing skin cancer is established during childhood and younger years.
A single, blistering sunburn in childhood more than doubles somebody’s chances of developing melanoma later in life.
For babies and toddlers, the best approach is to simply keep them out of the sun. If that is not possible, try to only put your child outdoors when the sun is less strong in the early morning or late afternoon.
Children and young people should use a waterproof sunscreen with sun protection factors of at least 30 that giving protection from both UVA and UVB rays. If outside in the sun, they should wear a T-shirt, a sun hat, and quality sunglasses with UV protection.
It is important to teach children from an early age about good sun protection behaviour. Help them to do that by clicking on the ‘Play and learn with Jo Spots’ book or downloading the printable games below.
